!! LACK OF SUPPORT SEES CLUB FALL !!
13 Aug 2012
It is with disappointment that this scribe has to report to all of the demise of the Drury Junior Cricket Club.
At its 2012 AGM (the nineteenth of the club's existence) held on Thursday 9th August (with the bare minimum of the quorum in attendance) it was decided after extensive canvassing of the financial family member of club (by the current committee) that owing to the lack of volunteer support, the club had no other option but to put itself into recess.
The lack of interest shown by the said parents to help form a new management committee for the approaching season, was at the heart of the issue as the club is in sound financial position. This coupled with most of the present committee standing down, has left the club with no other option.
Stalwart and outgoing chairperson Mrs Kim Williamson had the sad task of moving the motion to wind-up the club, and in her comments to the meeting she thanked the small serving committee for all their tireless work over the past 3 or 4 years. She also
expressed frustration at the outcome of what has happened.
As mentioned earlier, Kim has been a tower of strength and is one of the main reasons why the Drury Junior Cricket Club has lasted thus far, and as she has stated on several occasions previously, her time of heavy involvement was nearing its end and that the 2011 - 2012 season was to be her last as chairperson.
This to me once again indicates the apathy of the general public towards supporting community groups in general. Parents in particular using sports clubs as a "baby sitting service" are far more the norm these days than was the case not so long ago. Back in the halcyon days when little Johnny wanted to play sport the parents got actively involved in the club and became coaches, committee members and maybe even chairpersons.
And yes, I have heard it all before, the excuse..."work commitments"..."haven't got the time"...."I don't know enough about it to be of any use???"....
Wake up people, those volunteers you are so keen to off-load onto on a Saturday morning...yes you know the ones, they provide your child with the adventure of play and learning invaluable social skills (while you head off to your more pressing personal activities)... they have personal lives too! They also need the opportunities to do their own thing! However, fortunately for your child they see the need to support and become involved hardly brain surgery!!
A simple message to ALL ...show some commitment and loyalty... become actively involved in your club this coming season...
