Karaka Cricket Club v United Cricket Club (Counties Manukau) Incorporated Reserve 1 on Sat 05 Dec 2009 at 12:30pm
United Cricket Club (Counties Manukau) Incorporated Won By 3 Runs.

Match report The last time the two teams had met, United CC had easily demolished Karaka. The equation had changed dramatically this time around: United were without their ace opening bowler Nathan Palmer & this season's most consistent batsman Josh Anderson & could only manage to field 10 players; on the other hand, Karaka fielded a much stronger team including two new genuine allrounders, were led by a new captain & were a confident unit after their maiden win of the season over Weymouth last Saturday.

Karaka won the toss & inserted United in. By the 5th over, both the openers were back in the pavilion at 10/2, Rajat Malhotra(0) getting foxed by a well-concealed slower one by Joel & Jonathan Lawrence(1) edging one to slips off the same bowler. Match skipper Lee Ter Huurne(61) & Ian Adamson(4) restored some sanity to the proceedings & put on 36 runs for the 3rd wicket in 7.3 overs, when Ian edged Nathan Kane to wicketkeeper Zach. This brought co-skipper Deepak Bhakoo(23) to the crease, who seemed to be in a hurry to make up for a string of low scores in the previous games. Striking at over a-run-a-ball, he added 44 runs for the 4th wicket with Lee in 36 balls before mis-timing a pull off a super-slow down-the-leg widish ball off Devon & outside-edging it to square leg.
Deepak's departure at 90/4 saw Liam Jackson(3) being promoted to #6 in the batting order, but disappointed with an early exit & was soon followed by Michael Gordon(0). Lee found a suitable partner in Callum Jude(7 n.o.) & started accelerating, going past a well-deserved half-century in the process, but with the score at 121, lofted one to the deep mid-wicket fence, where the tiny Steve O'Callaghan took a very well-judged catch. Ronit Ghaiee(5) & Callum took the score to 132 when Stevie got Ronit to play one into the hands of Nathan Kane. At 132/8, it appeared to be curtains for a 10-man United CC, but #10 Owen Ford(16) had different ideas & refused to give his wicket away. Playing some outstanding cricket shots in his 34-ball stay, he added 29 valuable runs for the last wicket with Callum, who stuck around for 47 balls to stay unbeaten on 7 & helped the team to a respectable 161/9.

Defending 161, United's opening bowlers Liam Jackson (9-2-31-3) & Owen Ford (7-0-35-2) restricted the score to 22/1 off the first 8 overs, Liam providing the breakthrough in the 7th over, getting Joel caught by Callum. After Owen was hit for 10 in the 10th over, Rajat Malhotra (9-0-24-1) was introduced into the attack & proved his effectiveness by restricting the scoring while Liam took another two wickets from the other end, removing Zach(21) & Michael(5) before Rajat removed Devon(2). Callum Jude (4.4-0-21-3) replaced Liam in the 17th over & after being hit for a four by Nathan Kane(19) off his second ball, got his revenge off the next ball, getting Nathan caught in the deep through a very well-judged catch by Rajat. In his next over, he trapped Ben lbw. At the drinks interval, Karaka were struggling at 87/6 off 23 overs, with two relatively new batsmen at the crease. This infused some complacency into the match skipper Lee Ter Huurne, who introduced two non-regular bowlers into the attack after the breather. While Deepak Bhakoo (5-0-14-1) kept the runs in check & got rid of D'arcy(21) in his first spell of 3-0-8-1, Lee conceded 18 in his three overs. Before losing his wicket, D'arcy had added 50 runs for the 7th wicket with skipper Stu(34), which caused a worry in the United camp & Lee replaced himself with Ronit Ghaiee (1-0-6-0) & Deepak with Rajat. Stu found an able partner in Josh & the two kept moving the score closer to the target. Owen replaced Ronit & obliged by removing Stu through a very well-judged catch by Liam & then getting Josh to sky one towards short point, where Deepak & wicketkeeper Jonathan Lawrence (both going for the catch) had a massive collision, but Jonathan's brilliance saw him hang on to the catch & got United one step closer to victory. After Rajat completed his quota of 9 overs, Deepak was re-introduced into the attack & did not allow the Karaka batsmen to take any liberties, conceding only 6 runs in his next two overs, including 2 dubious calls for wide by umpire Nathan Kane. At the other end, after Owen conceded 5 runs in his 7th over, a nervous Lee threw the ball to Callum with Karaka needing 6 to win with 7 overs & 1 wicket in hand. Callum conceded two singles off his first three balls & then produced a gem of a ball, which immobilised Steve O'Callaghan(7) right in front of the wickets, getting the plumbest of plumb LBW decisions that prompted umpire Zach to raise his finger as soon as the appeal started, leaving Karaka all out 3 short of the United score of 161.

United, whose complacency put them into a difficult position from a position of strength, managed to get out of jail through some determined bowling in the closing stages, backed extremely well by some very tight fielding.
